Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher was the first woman prime minster in Britain. She was born on the 13th of October 1925 in Northamptonshire. She attended a girl’s school called hunting tower road, as well as getting a scholarship. Margaret ThatcherShe became prime minster from 1979 till 1990, so she stayed prime minster for 11 years. People say she was the most unpopular prime minster in British history. She has two children. She is 83 and still alive, she also has a husband called Sir Dennis Thatcher. Have you ever wondered what it was like to a prime minster in that time?

We asked some of our staff what it was like when Margaret Thatcher became prime minster.

Interviews

Do you remember Margaret Thatcher?
Yes because she made lots of big changes and was the first woman prime minister.

Did the country celebrate?
Yes because it was the first woman prime minister, but some people didn't like the changes she made.

How old were you?
I was 21 when she became prime minister.

We found out that she was the most unpopular prime minister. Do you think that is true?
People realized that she was a strong and proud woman but some people didn't agree with her changes.

Did she make any big decisions?
Yes she was mostly remembered for wanting to send us in the Faukland Islands war, a bit like the Gulf war that didn't happen that long ago, and she wouldn't let children have milk in school.

The first prime minsters and presidents in different countries.

Margaret Thatcher was the first woman prime minster in Britain, but over in America Obama is the first black president. People want different types of prime misters then and now. It will be different to be a prime minster or president now, it will not be anything like then. I wonder what will come next.
